1st Annual
Afghan Indoor Soccer Tournament- “CANADIAN AFGHAN CUP 2007”
We all know that one of the best ways of bringing people together
is organizing social and recreational events. Soccer is a popular
sport especially among the Afghan community in Canada & United
States. The Toronto Pamir Soccer Club (TPSC est. 2003) organized
an indoor soccer tournament for all Afghans in North America on
December 22 and 23, 2007. Organizing a recreational event such as
a soccer tournament provides a fun and safe space for youths and
adults to play soccer and benefit from a challenging activity that
contributes to personal and professional growth.
In the past, TPSC organized a successful outdoor Afghan soccer
tournament that consisted of 9 teams from different parts of
Ontario. The success of the tournament would have not been
possible without the support and contributions of some businesses,
individuals, and the three main organizers (Aziz Shahsamand
“President”, Mahboob Gulestani “Vice-President”, & Roain
Satarzadeh “Executive Director”).
After being very successful with the 1st Annual Afghan Outdoor
Soccer Tournament (July 13th, 14th, & 15th, 2007) Aziz, Mahboob, &
Roain decided to organize an indoor soccer tournament to keep the
spirit of community unity and positive youth engagement going. As
a result, the “Canadian Afghan Cup”, 1st Annual Afghan Indoor
Soccer Tournament was organized. It marked a historical point for
the Afghan community in Toronto considering that it was one of the
biggest Afghan indoor soccer tournaments that attracted 18 Afghan
teams from different parts of Toronto, Guelph, Kitchener,
Montreal, and Virginia (USA). Since it was a huge event, Mahboob &
Roain were invited to a CBC radio interview to talk about the
tournament, its impact on the Afghan community in Canada and
emphasized on - “the main idea is to bring Afghans together in a
positive way” says Roain.
